Places to Explore in Kumarakom

Kumarakom in Kerala's Kottayam district is one of the beautiful spots in India. A group of small islands with lush greenery along the Vembanad Lake is commonly known as Kumarakom. It takes only a short drive of 12 km from Kottayam to reach the blissful spot Kumarakom. Located below the mean sea level, it is also well-known as the Netherlands of Kerala. Vembanad is Kerala's biggest backwaters and India's extended lake. The splendor of the Vembanad, spreading from Kochi in the north to Alappuzha in the south, is certainly the biggest feature of Kumarakom. The lake draws migratory birds from several corners of the world. A ride on a houseboat alongside the Vembanad is a wonderful experience to fulfill. The tranquil cruise along the majestic lake is a memorable experience.


Aruvikuzhy Waterfalls


Aruvikuzhy waterfalls are situated just 34 km away from Kumarakom. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary


Migratory birds from different parts of the world gather to this 14-acre bird sanctuary at Kumarakom. Kumarakom bird sanctuary is situated on the banks of the Vembanad Lake and is the favorite spot for bird waters and nature lovers. It is also an ideal location for relaxing walks and small picnics.


Bay Island Driftwood Museum


This museum features a rare collection of statues made from driftwood. These statues are made from the driftwood gathered from the coasts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The trunks and roots of trees in their journey through the ocean get shaped by Mother Nature into various noticeable forms such as birds, animals, and fishes, before being washed onshore.

Pathiramanal




An island measuring 10 acres in size located in the middle of the Vembanad Lake, Pathiramanal is home to diverse species of beautiful birds, including rare ones that have migrated from far-off lands. A visit to this exotic island adds a distinct flavor to the Kumarakom trip. Entry to the island is free.

Places of worship

Within Kumarakom and its neighboring areas, there are numerous places of devotion. Talikotta Shiva Temple, St Mary's Church, Thazhathangady Juma Masjid, and Vaikom Mahadeva Temple are some of them. Most of these are centuries-old and hold a tribute to the architectural excellence of Kerala. After you are done exploring in Kumarakom, head straight to Vaikom, which is 18km away from here. If you want to just sit quietly by the sea, and observe the waves reaching the shores, then Vaikom beach would be the perfect spot for you. Ten statues remembering the Vaikom Satyagraha have also been placed along the path leading to the beach by the Lalitha Kala Academy.
